Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to Massage in Motion. We want your session with us to be a pleasant experience. We’ve included this section to answer commonly asked questions and to give you an idea of what you may expect during the time you are here.

Before any service, you will be asked to fill out a personal health form. It is helpful if you can arrive a few minutes early to complete the form. A consultation follows to allow us to discuss your major areas of concerns and to give you time to ask any questions you may have. Communication between us is vital to achieve the desired results and to help you relax. This applies to whether you are receiving a massage, facial, body wrap or other service.

Question: I’ve never had a massage before. What can I expect during the session?

Answer: After our consultation, I will leave the room while you undress to your level of comfort and slip under the covers. You will find our tables warm and well padded for your comfort. I will then return and begin our work, usually starting with you laying face down. Halfway thru the massage, you will be asked to turn over and starting with the head, we will proceed down to the feet. Afterwards, I will provide you with water and step outside the room while you dress.

Question: What do you mean by my “level of comfort.”

Answer: Some people are more modest than others and may be uncomfortable completely undressing for a session with someone they do not know. I assure you I am a professional therapist and all personal boundaries will be respected; however, I also believe that if you wish to leave an undergarment on, that is perfectly fine.

Question: Do you use a draping procedure?

Answer: Yes, a sheet and a blanket resting on top of your body serves as a modesty drape. This creates a boundary of privacy and assists in keeping you warm. I only undrape the part of the body on which I am working.

Question: Does massage hurt?

Answer: During our consultation we will discuss your goals for the session. If you desire a soothing, relaxing massage; generally you will feel a sense of well-being and no discomfort. If we are addressing specific issues of pain, depending on the techniques used you may have some soreness for a few days. Just as each massage is unique to the individual, so is the level of pressure and depth of work. You are my best judge of what feels appropriate to your body. Please feel free to let me know if the pressure needs to be adjusted for your comfort zone.

Question: Do you work on pregnant women?

Answer: Yes, after the first trimester massage can significantly ease any discomfort you may be experiencing and may assist in an easier labor and delivery. I do not recommend nor do I perform massage in the first three months of the pregnancy since this is a time when most miscarriages may occur. The health and well being of my guests are my first priority. I am also certified in prenatal techniques from a renowned instructor.

Question: Can you diagnose my pain?

Answer: No. This is definitely out of my scope of practice. I am not a licensed physician nor do I perform “adjustments.” I may recommend you see a medical doctor if you are having specific pain as delayed diagnosis may prolong or exacerbate a medical condition.

Question: Do you bill insurance?

Answer: No, not at this time.

Question: When I call, I get the answering machine. Why?

Answer: When I am with a client, they have my undivided attention. Unfortunately, this often means I miss a call. I apologize for this inconvenience but in order to fully answer any questions you may have when you call or to schedule appointments, I usually return messages between clients or at the end of the day. The only reason your call is not returned the same day is because I am out of the office.

Question: You offer an assortment of facials. How do I know which one to choose?

Answer: Again we will have a consultation to define what you want from your facial. All of the facials include deep cleansing, exfoliations and mask procedures. Some facials may take a little longer depending on whether we need to do extensive extraction work for acne or in the case of the “European Facial,” the massage is longer. Each treatment is as unique as the individual.

Question: Why do you ask about my medications?

Answer: Certain medications can have an effect on the skin whether they are used topically or taken internally. Some drugs, like Accutane or Retin A can thin the skin and therefore we need to be cautious. Some procedures, such as waxing are contraindicated during the time you are taking these medications. Many lifestyle factors can also influence the outcome of a facial. I will inquire about your water intake, how much you sleep and exercise as well as your medications.

Question: I did some cost comparisons and you charge more than some of the other massage therapists. Why should I choose you over those who are cheaper?

Answer: I charge according to my level of training and experience that is usually significantly more than those who charge less. Also, I have invested in state of the art equipment and education and most people factor this into the selection of their therapist. The ultimate consideration should not be the price of a treatment but how well the therapist identifies your concerns and addresses them in a professional, caring manner.

Question: How far in advance do I need to book?

Answer: In order for you to receive the time that best fits your schedule I recommend making your appointment at least a week ahead or to rebook before you leave the studio. I occasionally have “same day” appointments or last minute cancellations. I try very hard to fit our time around your schedule. My evening slots are the most requested.

Question: Do you work on children or handicapped individuals?

Answer: Yes. Some children with conditions such as ADD may have great results with massage in calming them and helping them to rest better. Young athletes/dancers usually will have less injury when they receive regular massages. Some children are rewarded for good grades with a spa service. Educating young people about proper skin care will help with those adolescent hormonal changes. Others with medical conditions may also find relief from massage. The massage/facial beds will accommodate guests in wheelchairs by dropping low to the floor for easier transitioning on and off the table. In all medical conditions, I require permission from the physician prior to massage therapy to avoid any potential harm.

Question: Do you offer gift certificates?

Answer: Yes. You may choose a dollar amount or a specific service.

Question: What if I have other questions?

Answer: Please feel free to call. I want you to feel completely comfortable with our services and do not mind addressing any of your concerns.
